Trained as a biochemist, graduated with Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Science in 1989, after being a post-doctoral fellow at Duke University , worked as a faculty at Stanford University before moving to drug discovery R & D in 1993. Worked for a start-up biotech company CV Therapeutics for 3 years and have been employed with Roche since 1996. Over 14 years of drug discovery and development experience in the therapeutic areas of cardiovascular, osteoporosis, renal insufficiency, hyperphosphatemia, hyperparathyroidism, and HIV. As a Research Leader at Roche, Surya successfully managed cross-disciplinary and functional R&D efforts to advance compounds to clinical trials. Lead or participated in the discovery of several compounds, including a PTH receptor agonist (RO66271) for osteoporosis and A1 antagonist for diuresis. Served as a consultant to several small-to-medium size biotechnology companies, led the teams or participated in licensing-in, acquisitions and investing opportunities for Roche and for several venture capitalists. Author of several therapeutic and target discovery patents and peer reviewed journal articles.

Mohan Raj Goyal (Vice President - Membership)
Mohan joined IISc in 1997 and received his M.E. (E.E.) in 1999. Soon after, he joined a Silicon Valley startup as Software Engineer and was promoted to Software Architect. He has extensive experience providing software solutions to the financial industry, including retail banking, trading and brokerage. Currently he works as Independent Web Services Architect with Barclays Global Investors. He was member of Student Council, Mess President and Hindi Samiti president during his stay in IISc. He has been instrumental and active since 2002 to build the IISc AANA from complete scratch.
